Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation is both an exercise and an education program designed to provide a structured and safe environment to work toward controlling your cardiac and respiratory problems.
Criteria for Admission
The program is designed for patients with emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis and other chronic lung diseases. A referral by your physician is required before admission. You will remain under the care of your primary physician, who will receive regular reports of your progress.
Control and alleviate, as much as possible, the symptoms and complications of respiratory impairment.
Train the patient to achieve her or his optimal capacity to carry out activities of daily living.
Decrease psychological symptoms such as anxiety or depression.
Improve quality of life.
Promote independence and self-reliance.
Increase exercise tolerance.
Reduce exacerbations and hospitalizations.
Encourage participation in recreational pursuits.
Phase I is an inpatient program of education, counseling and modified exercises.
Phase II is an early outpatient program of exercise, education and counseling. The exercise plan is designed to recondition and improve your respiratory efficiency.
You will have an exercise stress test to determine your entry exercise level.
Increases in your level of exercise will be based on your tolerance, heart rate and blood pressure response.
A respiratory therapist and/or a registered nurse conduct the exercise sessions, which last approximately one hour, three times a week for twelve weeks (36 sessions).

Phase IV is an independent phase where you can monitor your progress on chart's provided. If you have not been hospitalized for an acute exacerbation within the past year and meet criteria, your doctor can write you a prescription of entry into the program.
Most insurance companies will cover part of the cost of Phase II, if prescribed by your physician. Please consult with your insurance carrier for specific questions.
